Patchworks' platform is a your basic Fleer product, simple and boring. A smattering of unimaginative color parallels mirror the basic set. Our 18-pack box yielded one uninspiring B.J. Upton sticker autograph and a dual jersey card displaying plain jersey swatches of David Wright and Mike Piazza.
Patchworks' one saving grace, the premium patch cards, are available in generous quantities making them available to the average collector. Case in point, we pulled a fat Albert Pujols three-color nameplate patch card numbered to 49. That was a sweet moment. The nameplate patch, while not overwhelming in size, is easily the creme de la creme of this product.
We don't blame Patchworks lack of personality on Upper Deck; after all UD inherited this product and arguably made it better by removing the redemptions and reworking checklists. But next year, the jury will be out on the brand managers in Carlsbad when the Patchwork concept and product line is fully developed under their corporate watch.
