The first thing to remember about buying any video game , is to make sure that you have done some research as to what the game contains , or may contain overall.  Starting with the "type" of game , IE: strategy , shooter (first person?) , rpg , adventure , or board game style , you will narrow down the category that you prefer , to make a better decision , and end up happier with the game once you play it.

Next , is the rating - usually the "mature" or 17+ rated games are for more serious gamers.  So , if you don't like fast action [which may require some indepth computer skills] to play with any success (especially - online ) , then you can immediately count yourself out by following these 2 buying rules.  If you have trouble typing on a computer keyboard , and you use the [ 1 finger ] style to type letters or fill in forms or blanks , you may want to avoid these types of more serious games completely , as they require alot of finger dexterity to immediately reach the right keys at the right times throughout the game.

You can also judge games merely by paying attention to their "rating".  Some "teen" rated games are very good games , but they require a player with specific interests that are contained within the games , so that they can enjoy them without being extremely critical about their playability value [ IE: video graphics ].

In general , if you like fast action games , with lots of impressive graphics and options , you should avoid games that are readily available for "free download" throughout the internet or otherwise , as these games are very simple and basically don't leave the "pinball machine" style or framework .  Although you would be surprised how many "good" games can be downloaded free online.  The earlier [ cheaper style ] games are usually associated with websites that offer them at some sort of public venue oriented place , like a magazine [ for readers ] , not gamers - free.  You can literally spend hours looking through and trying out free game downloads , and only find 1 game you would actually keep and play.  On the other hand there are some outright classics [ like Mario Brothers ] that stand out in the crowd and if you like the "screen to screen" style , these might be for you or someone who likes that sort of gamestyle.  There are 2 types of "screen to screen" styles - left to right & bottom to top sequencing [ level through level ].

As far as I am concerned , when players complain about a game's value or worth , it shows that they didn't do "ANY" research on the game itself , and may have just bought it to keep up with friends or other gamers.  It is a very good idea once you have established an interest in a game to look for "demo's" to download online - free.  That way you can become familiar with the game before you actually buy it - not to mention - play it or give it a bad review or worse.

Next in line is your system.  You need to know the capabilities of your "game" operating system [ IE: XBOX , PS2 or 3 or PC.  Without being specific , the PC platform is the most difficult and complicated platform to buy games for.  The PC [ Personal Computer ] platform opens up an entirely expansive realm of gaming , that can be difficult to understand.  So - knowing your system and it's capabilities is important , whereas "other" gaming systems can run just about any game you throw at them , other than having to pay attention to memory size or hard drive size to be able to load the game onto the system and play it  [ because you will need to save your progress and options ].

To recap : you need to know the game [style or type]  + [ the rating ] + [ it's skill level ] + [ platform ].  The skill level is basically related to the difficulty in which the game may require to be played well or enjoyed.  While the rating is sometimes confused with this , the rating only depicts whether or not there may be some sort of inclusion of something that should not be ignored for players who are under the "rating" age.  The skill level is not really advertised or explained , but through searching for information on the game you can find out exactly what the game will be like and that information will eventually allow you to decide what "skill level" is required.

Speaking of ratings - one such rating is the top rating [ Mature 17+] .  This category of rating consists of alot of "WAR" based or related games.  While there also can be additions made to these ratings : such as : blood , violence , foul language and alike.  These types of games usually include an option to "disable" these functions or degrade them to a "teen" rated level.

While "WARGAMES" may lead the gaming industry as related to sales or popularity , they contain the absolute best possible games available across the platform spectrum with the inclusion of "WAR" related type games , of which there are many , because , even [Mario Brothers] knock off opponents or enemies during gameplay.  Appeal has been pointed towards the action type of game that consists of winning against some sort of opponent and today's graphics have catered to that popularity , while game preference is still a matter of a "PLAYER'S" choice.

We have to remember and appreciate that these are "games" in 2008 , and we should also remember that games have suggested violence or otherwise for a very long time.  Monopoly even , could be termed as "a greedy person's" type of game , as the game may suggest that having some sort of Monopoly on something is a good idea or "NEEDED".

With an understanding of today's video graphics , we can now see that video games are even better than watching movies or television and that video games are more unrelated and more unrealistic than cinema movies are.  The word "game" has a profound effect upon our perception of reality , whereas , the word "movie" does not suggest any sort of unrealistic content , because alot of movies are "100% REAL" , filmed on location.
