If you've been wondering what does Wave 1 and 2 mean....well let me explain. Mattel decided to continue the project of making the Joker toy for Dark Knight. With Heath Ledgers death on the popularity in the media, Mattel was a little hesitant since they didn't want to add more to the negative hype(drug allegations). Anyhow Mattel created the regular Batman Dark Knight toys...but they wanted to create a different marketing campaign from their last Batman The Beginning Movie so they created the "Movie Master Series" as well. These were 6 inch figures that resembled the movie character accordingly. Well as everyone guessed, the Joker toy was going to be hot, and well it was pretty hot since it sold out in every WalMart, Toy R US in the USA within 2 hours. Every collector rushed to get themselves atleast 1 Heath Ledger Movie Master Joker toy. Once all of the toys were bought out that was it! No more to be made. However Mattel's internal team decided that there was a couple of things wrong with the Heath Ledger Joker toy and in an interview with one of the executives they stated that "Internal affairs found issues with the joker toy and want to change them". Basically they were saying that the Joker toy was too scary for children and there was also an issue with Heaths "Loose" knife that he holds. So Mattel created a 2nd WAVE of toys, and would announce that they would create also a 3rd and 4th wave. The difference with the 2nd waves and so on is that the joker toy doesn't look like heath ledger. He also doesn't havethat scary make-up, his knife is not removable...and he has different set of eyes to make him look more happy. Also what change was they decided to put air vent holes on the side of the box, and changed the UPC code of the box.
Any collector who wants to purchase a Dark Knight Movie Master Toy knows that he wants the first Wave since it's the original, sold out version. This is why some joker toys are so expensive because they are the "first" issue. Not the remakes. As a personal collector myself I always want to make sure I get the "original", and not the scrap left overs. If you have any questions write me an email!
