Contrary to the long standing belief that babies are safe to ride forward facing once they turn 1, it is recommended that we keep our children Rear facing well beyond their 1st birthday, preferably until they hit the rear facing height or weight limit in their convertible (30-35lbs with 1" of shell above their head). Once they are forward facing it is recommended to keep them  in a 5 point harness for as long as possible. The following seats have been certified in Canada to higher forward-facing weight limits indicated in paretheses. In the US there are many seats certified to 70 and even 80lbs!

To see convincing proof on why to keep your child rear facing, simply search youtube for "rear facing crash test" I personally found all the results so enlightening, my son is 28months and still rearfacing. He will remail rear facing until he hits 30lbs, likely around age 3.
