IS IT A 'NODDER' A 'WOBBLE / BOBBLE HEAD' OR A 'RING KEEPER / HOLDER'
I have never understood why so many people call a 'Wobble head a Bobble Head' or a 'Ring Keeper' a 'Nodder', I hope the following will be helpful in correctly naming the item you are selling or collecting.
'Nodders'
Vintage 'Nodders' were made of porcelain or pottery, the neck has a pin going through it that sits in a groove on the shoulder of the figurine or the pin is fitted through holes on the shoulders so that the head when touched will actually 'Nod' backwards and forwards just as a human head does when nodding in agreement during a conversation. 20th century 'Nodders' can be found in many different materials but their heads still 'Nod'
'Wobble or Bobble Heads'
Vintage 'Wobblers' as I call them have their heads on springs they were often made of wood and when shaken their heads 'Wobbled' in all directions.
20th century 'Wobble Heads' are made of many different materials the head can be on a spring or on a pinnacle set on the shoulders...The heads do not nod backwards and forwards in one direction so the correct name is 'Wobble or Bobble Head'
'Ring Keepers also called Ring Holders'
Vintage 'Ring Keepers' were made of porcelain or glass and usually matched a ladies dressing table set. They were designed as a small dish with a pointed column in the centre, when undressing the lady of the house would place her ring over the column so that it could be easily found when needed.
Modern 20th century ring keepers can be found in all sorts of novelty shapes and sizes and made in all kinds of materials, such as glass, metal, pottery and lucite / plastic. If made in the shape of a figurine the head lifts off a long neck so that the ring or rings can be placed over the neck and the head replaced if the figurine is in animal or human form the ring looks like a decorative collar or a necklace. Because the head is loose on the neck it will swivel from side to side when moved, it does not 'Nod' or 'Wobble'
These are two examples of 1970s-1980s dog shaped ring keepers.
-----
A ring slides over the neck, and the head holds the ring in place.
The Lucite Ring Keepers are from my colletion of Lucite items and were produced from the 1930s- 1950s. The glass one is a very modern copy of a vintage keeper.
