I have actively collected Barber Dimes for many years and have always been an ardent error collector, but this one is a new one to me. I found a 1909-O dime with an over-punched  "D" mintmark. It appears that when dies were being mintmarked prior to shipment to their respective mints, that the "D" mintmark on this particular die somehow got punched upside down or backwards. Anyway, the "D" was facing left instead of right. There was no way to correct this blunder, and the die should have been discarded. "Should have been". . .but, in typical government employee fashion, he attempted to coverup his mistake, and punched the nest largest mintmark punch over it, the "O" for New Orleans. Maybe he figured that this was the last year for New Orleans as a mint, and nobody would notice it. Obviously, it was caught, because with so many people checking every little thing, surely it would have been widely publicized and would have been listed in the Red Book. or other major coin publications . . .Unless it is so rare, that only a handful were made, and like so many other really rare pieces, the publishers just feel that we, as collectors, just don't need to know about them. This over mintmark is very easily seen! Unlike the very slightly repunched "O" variety, this is clear as a bell; with absolutely NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! To coin a phrase, "Ray Charles could see this one!"  Just inside the right side of the "O" mintmark, the vertical line of the "D" is easily seen, and the "barrel" of the Reversed "D" overlaps the outside of the left side of the "O".  Anyway, this is the first one that I've ever seen! Look for them and let me know if you find any.  1909-O/Reversed "D"
