How to Get a Good Fit With Not Your Daughter's Jeans
I will explain to you the secret on how to purchase Not Your Daughter's Jeans, so that you will have a good comfortable fit and look skinny all at the same time. NYDJ jeans I have found as a seller many times run small. The rhinestone jeans (Tuxedo) run extremely small, so I always recommend buying one size up. The black jeans run small as well, but then again most black jeans do because they must boil the dye into the jeans. This boiling process actually shrinks the jean; therefore, I suggest buying one size up as well with these. Most of the natural blue denim jeans seem to run true to size, BUT I like to buy one size up and then cook them in the dryer to one size down to get the perfect fit. You don't dare do that with the rhinestone, or black jeans, or they may shrink too much. Wash them, but then let them drip dry to avoid shrinkage if you feel that the size is exact to your measurements.
The concept of these jeans was to be able to purchase one size smaller, so that you would fit into a tight fitting jean in order to hold your stomach in. I know for a fact that health problems were not taken into consideration when designing these jeans. Women who have health problems such as Acid Reflux, Aorta Hernias, Gall Bladder, etc will actually cause damage to themselves even more when wearing tight fitting jeans. After all, "these jeans were originally made for the older woman" (as Leslie Rudes stated in the New York Times September 21, 2006 article). Let's face it, many "older" women have some sort of health problems, because that usually comes along with age.
The secret of these jeans!
The secret is in the percentage of Spandex; most jeans have 1 - 2% Spandex. NYDJ have a whopping 4% Spandex which allows them to stretch more and hold their shape better than the average jean. The cross stitch in the front does allow tummy control, but only if purchased tighter, so the jean can suck the tummy in. The jean actually tricks the eye in your rear area. The back pockets are sewn closer; thus, it allows the behind to appear smaller. When manufacturers sew pockets further apart, it makes your derriere look larger.
My advice when buying these jeans...DON'T buy one size smaller. They will be too tight and too uncomfortable to wear especially after washing.
Measure your hip first and always ask for hip and waist measurements before purchasing. I like to make certain that the jeans will fit my buyers before I mail them, so I take the time to correspond with each buyer in making sure they have a good fit. Some jeans may have manufacturer size errors, but the measurements will take care of that.
Allow one inch larger and then cook them in the dryer to shrink them to one size smaller. Don't buy too large of a size, because you will find that they do not shrink that much. NYDJ jeans are tough and hold their shape, so you may not be able to shrink them that much.
Purchasing a size smaller will not only make you feel uncomfortable in a tight fit, but your cellulite will actually bulge through the thigh area since there is no reinforcement in that area of the jean. I strongly suggest wearing a pair of footless pantyhose like Spanx (not mid thigh) under your Capris, or any support panty hose under your standard NYDJ. If Spanx are a bit pricey, then Sarah Blakley (the founder of Spanx) sells the same footless pantyhose at a less expensive price under the name of "Assets." You can be certain of a smooth look and fit once you place your NYDJ jeans on if you wear some kind of hose, or shaper mentioned above underneath them.
If you follow this advice, these jeans will not only be the most comfortable jeans you ever wear, but they will be the jeans that make you look the skinniest in.
