HOW TO PACK AN ACCORDION FOR SHIPPING Preparing an accordion for shipping only takes a few moments but will save time and money for the person receiving the item. Throwing the accordion case in a box and taping it shut guarantees that there will be damage to this delicate instrument. 1. Make sure the bellow closures are snapped in place. There is one on each end of the bellows. 2. Remove the shoulder straps from the accordion. (not bass strap) 3. Remove any dirt or debris from inside the case. 4. The BASS buttons must be secured so they do not (dive) or fall into the accordion when the shipper drops the box. This is accomplished by using thin cello or masking tape. Completely cover the bass buttons with tape being careful to NOT PRESS THE BUTTONS DOWN. Gently rub the buttons so the tape makes contact with them. Be sure the tape extends to the sides so the tape does not curl or peel back. DO NOT TAPE THE TREBLE KEYS. 5. Wrap the accordion in plastic. Thin plastic wrap is available from any hardware of home depot. 6. The accordion must be secured inside the case so it can not shift. I use foam rubber at the front and back of the accordion to hold it from moving. Once secure don’t forget to place the straps in the case. There will be room over the keyboard for the straps. Remember the accordion is plastic wrapped so the straps won’t damage the keyboard. 7. Boxing the accordion is very important. It should never be shipped in a box that only allows for the instrument to be laying flat. Pick up the case by the handle. That is the way it should be shipped so your box will have to be higher than it will be wide. Accordions shipped flat take a real beating. The box should have about one inch of clearance all way around once the case is placed in it. Place packing material in this space as well. Be sure to label the box on top and put arrows on the sides showing that the box should not be shipped flat. Putting address labels on top of the box will help it to stay upright as the shipper will need information from the address label from time to time in transit. 8. This all seems like a lot of work but actually only takes a few moments to pack for shipping.
