Step by step setup speed trap and red light camera GPS POI database in your Tomtom GPS.

  1. Copy Data Files into Map Folder

The speed trap data are divided into seven categories.  The data are compiled to TomTom .ov2 format. There are some .ov2 files and each file has its icon file in bmp format. These files need to copy over to map folder in your GPS unit.

Normally, the map folder is named as "USA_and_Canada", and contains "CLINE.DAT, CNODE.DAT, CNAME.DAT" map files.

If you are using all-in-one GPS unit (e.g. Tomtom One), you need to connect your GPS with computer using USB cable. Double click "My Computer", you will find your GPS device is listed as a disk device. You can browse your GPS device to find the map folder in Explorer.

If you are using PDA device with Tomtom NAVIGATOR 6, you may need ActiveSync to access map folder in the PDA.

  2. Setup POI Warn

When you run TomTom NAVIGATOR, the software will automatically load these speed trap POIs from .ov2 files. What you will do is setting warn when approach these red light cameras or speed traps.

Tap the screen bring up the main menu, tap “Change preferences” button go to Preferences menu. Tap arrow button go to the second page, then tap “Manage POIs” button go to Manage POIs menu. In Manage POIs menu, tap “Warn when near POI”.

On the screen, will show a list of POI category. The red light camera and speed trap category names are same as .ov2 filenames. Type in the POI category name to find out red light camera or speed trap category. Then tap red light camera or speed trap category that you want to set.

Then it will show default warn distance 250 meters. 250 meters seems too short. You may want to make it longer. Type in new distance that you desired, then tap "Done".

After setting warning distance, it will ask you to select warning sound. Choose your desired sound, then tap done. Then it will ask whether you want check “Warn only if POI is on route”. Make sure it is checked, then tap done.

Set all other speed trap categories by repeating these steps.

  3. Checking red light camera and speed trap POIs

In main menu, tap “Browse map”. These POIs should be on the map. Please note that not all POIs will display on the map, because the software will hide some clustered POIs. You will see more as you zoom in the map.

  4. Update new POI data

When updating new POI data, just repeat step 1 to override old POI data files in the map folder.
