Two Top Diamond Laboratories:

  • GIA and EGL are the most popular certified laboratories. Both can grade diamonds and gemstones. You can be safe buying a diamond  or a gemstone if they come with one if these certificates. These are the two most trusted sources of grading.

GIA-

Established in 1931, GIA is the world’s largest and most respected nonprofit institute of gemological research and learning. Conceived 75 years ago in the grand tradition of Europe’s most respected institutes, GIA discovers (through GIA Research), imparts (through GIA Education), and applies (through the GIA Laboratory and GIA Instruments) gemological knowledge to ensure the public trust in gems and jewelry.

GIA is the creator of the famous 4Cs of diamond value (color, clarity, cut, and carat weight). It is also the corporate birthplace of the International Diamond Grading System™. Today, GIA’s D-Z color-grading scale and GIA’s Flawless–I3 clarity-grading scale are recognized by virtually every professional jeweler and savvy diamond buyer in the world. The Institute is also known for having developed and patented the first modern jeweler's loupe.

EGL-

EGL USA is one of the largest and oldest independent gemological institutions focusing on gemstone certification and research. Originally part of an international network founded in Europe in 1974,  EGL USA opened its first U.S. lab in the heart of New York's international diamond and jewelry district in 1977.

In 1986 EGL USA became independently owned.  Today the EGL USA Group has laboratories in New York City, Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Toronto.

Secondary diamond laboratories:

  • HRD, which stands for Hoge Raad voor Diamant, or "Diamond High Council," officially represents the Belgian diamond sector at home and abroad. Established in Antwerp in 1973, HRD is a multifaceted organization.
  • AGS- The American Gem Society is dedicated to upholding the highest ethical standards in the diamond and jewelry industries. The AGS established a laboratory in 1996 to provide modern diamond grading services for the diamond marketplace. Its conservative approach to diamond grading has made the AGS one of the world's most respected gemological laboratories. The AGS was the first diamond laboratory to issue a separate grade for diamond cut and to include that grade in each diamond report. Many laboratories have yet to catch up with innovations the AGS pioneered a decade ago. AGS uses a unique 0 to 10 grading system to quantify diamond color, clarity, and cut. A grade of 0 indicates the rarest, most desirable quality; a 10 rating is the least desirable. Each number corresponds to the internationally accepted GIA diamond scale nomenclature.
  • IGI- The International Gemological Institute (IGI), established in 1975 in Antwerp and New York, is one of the world's leading gemological institutions. Thanks to the IGI's reputation for integrity, accuracy, and reliability, hundreds of thousands of diamonds pass through this laboratory's halls each year. Each diamond graded by the IGI is scientifically analyzed by several graduate gemologists.
  • HWL- Harold Weinstein Gemmological Laboratory, Canada's most experienced independent gemmological laboratory, was founded in 1977 to serve the jewellery trade, the jewellery buying public, the legal profession, the insurance industry , banks and government agencies.
