Stuffing. Since a reborner whether the buyer has allergies, the stuffing should always be a premium quality polyester fill which states Non-Toxic, Anti-Allergen or Non-Allergic. Never re-use poly fill from another doll.
Weighting. Glass beads, resin pellets and poly pellets are the only materials that should be used to weight a baby's body. They are inert, and therefore non-allergic and non-toxic. They should be enclosed in a pouch, which is securely sewn or tied to prevent the pellets and beads to come out into the body.
Sand, rice, beans, cat litter or lead shot should never be used.
Sand will leak through the seams. It is also banned for export, which could cause custom officials to seize the doll.
Food products will attract bugs, even in the cleanest house, and will rot over time.
As for cat litter, it will absorb moisture, even though it is enclosed. It will clump and give off a foul smell.
Lead shot was commonly used for dolls and bears in the 19th century. It rusts and gives an unpleasant smell. It has since been banned from consumer products.
