What is SDHC?  What are the different speeds and classes?
  1. A new SD format, SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity, SD 2.0), allows capacities in excess of 2GB.
  2. Uses the FAT32 file system which supports partition sizes greater than 2GB
  3. It uses the same form factor as SD, but the SD 2.0 standard in SDHC uses a different memory addressing method, thus can reach a maximum capacity of 2048GB
  4. SDHC cards only work in SDHC compatible devices, but standard SD cards work in both SD and SDHC devices
  5. SDHC cards have SD Speed Class Ratings defined by the SD Association.
  6. The SD Speed Class Ratings specify the following minimum sustained write speed on to EMPTY SDHC cards:
  7. Class 2: 2MB/s
  8. Class 4  4MB/s
  9. Class 6  6MB/s
I hope this guide has clarified some key aspects of SDHC cards. Remember to use a high capacity card reader with your newly purchased SD card, this will allow proper access speeds and access capacities greater than 1GB.   Thank you for reading this.
