A Review of the Nintendo Wii.
Personal Gaming History:
I have not purchased a video game console
that was not second hand before. The last
console that I owned was the Nintendo N64.
I have always thought of my gaming PC as my
main game platform. :)
When the Wii first came out I was really
interested in it. I tracked the Wii in the
news and listened to how "fun" it was.
I have played Nintendo party games before
and I decided to pick up a Wii due to the
fun factor as a party game.
Console Impressions:
I was impressed by how easy it was to set
up and configure the Wii. I was also happy
to see that it came with a free game!
The controller is fun to play with. Gesturing
and playing with hand movement is a blast.
The games tend to be light on graphics and
they look "cartoonie" However, this is not
the point. I have button smashed with the
best of them on all the other systems. The
ability to swing the controller like a bat,
or throw a bowling ball is a totally new
experience!
Overall I'm totally hooked on the Wii. I
had my 60 year old parents over and they even
were laughing and playing Wii Sports. A total
hit.
Online:
I had some difficulty setting up my Wii for online
access. I'm a computer teacher and I had to log
into my wireless router to do some configuring.
I needed to switch my broadcast channel for my
router in order to get the Wii to work.
Once I had the Wii online I then let it update
for an evening. Yes, starting at 6pm and going
until 9pm with strong signal for the updates!
I have downloaded the Opera browser and spent time
surfing the net on the Wii. I believe that a keyboard
is needed in order to make this a better experience.
Download times were great. I have yet to download
a "classic" game yet, but I will soon.
Overall:
The Wii is not going to compete with the PS3 or Xbox 360
in the graphic's department. Yet it has expanded the
gaming market by using the motion control's. Any
system that has my 60 year old father throwing strike's
over and over is great. He played for over 3 hours straight!
If I had the other 3rd generation systems he would not
have even touched them.
5/5. A perfect system for a party!
