IM A COLLECTOR OF ZIPPO'S, AND I WILL BE SHOWING YOU IN THIS GUIDE HOW TO SPOT A FAKE/COUNTERFEIT ZIPPO. BY SHOWING YOU PHOTO'S OF FAKE ZIPPOS AS A PICTURE/PHOTO CAN SHOW ALOT MORE THEN WORDS.

I WILL ALSO GIVE I BRIEF OUTLINE OF WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN THE PHOTO WHEN LOOKING AT THESE FAKE & COUNTERFEIT LIGHTERS.

Look at the poor finish on this one,the design of the U.S. Marines  has been badly stamp-impressed on. With many of these stamp-pressed fakes the ZIPPO logo is nearly always impressed on the lid.Its just trying too hard to be a Zippo.

Also the size of this Fake is wrong its to thick for a Zippo, and the lid is the wrong size. The Price Sticker is also Fake. A Cheap Looking Tinny Metal, very poor Quality. The most common designs on these stamp-pressed fakes are American Flags,Eagles, and Cigarette Brands.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Lighter/Jewelry Company Called "Winky and Dutch". First sold these type of Lighters with their logo W&D pressed on the bottom of the Lighters, during the early 1990s. They no longer import/sell this type with the glass dome Photo Mounted Disks. But now you can find these Lighters on eBay with ZIPPO Stamped on the bottom. They are 100% Fake all with the mounted photo disks which often feature, James Bond,Princess Di, Bruce Lee, Clint Eastwood,Elvis Presley and Pin ups; Bettie Page.

They are Bottom Stamped Zippo Chinese Fakes, some with the "canned bottom" don't be fooled as their good copies but worthless to a Zippo Collector.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A 100% Counterfeit with fake Zippo price sticker, these Fakes also have a Counterfeit Safety Seal on the Back. The hinges on these are often set wrong with a larger cut out gap on the outside of the lighter around the hinge. These are often weak, and cause the lid to come loose. Oh and do expect the emblem to fall off if you drop the lighter!

Again this lighter is all wrong with a cheap Russian Emblem applied. KGB and USSR Military  oversized emblems are sometimes applied on real Zippos also.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a Star Brand Lighter which quite a few People mistake these for a Zippo. This one states the U.S. Army,ive also seen;U.S. Navy,Marines,Airforce. But This one has the Fake Zippo Price Sticker and has been put in a Zippo case. By the seller trying to pass it as a Zippo!

Do look very close at the Quality of the finish when looking for Real Zippos. If the design looks like a stuck-on plate,do ask the seller questions. If you wish to see more of this type search ebay for "star lighters".

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Pin-up Petty Girl design; a Copy, the Colours on this fake are wrong, and again the art work is very poor. The finish on the copy is a tin alloy. The true Zippo is a Solid Brass Finish and came at first in a Custom Box with a Artwork Sleeved Cover.

The base with its "canned bottom" is not stamped with the Zippo date markings or logo.....Yet.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This Mercedes-Benz fake is part of a set of European Cars ive also seen; Alfa Romeo,VW Beetle, and Jaguar....Its a cheap looking metal alloy finish on this fake, again alot of fakes try too hard to prove their real Zippo's by having the ZIPPO lettering logo on the lid.

But with the poor design on the lettering, its not even straight, and the Fake Price Sticker. It looks quite cheap and nasty..Note the lighters inner looks used, but the price stickers still on strange?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are real Zippos with emblems, which have been applied on. Zippo would not make these due to copyright/legal/bad taste reasons.  But sellers do sell these as "True Zippos" Ive seen many from Mickey Mouse to the Ku Klux Klan and Hells Angels.

Do be careful, ask sellers questions as Zippo still make lighters with fixed emblems, but not as many as they used too. Do ask yourself would Zippo make these?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Photo Engraved ZIPPO,with photographic impressions. These are mostly real Zippos, which you can buy and have/with any photo engraved finish design put on them....They are NOT finished designs by Zippo.

With some Sellers, Listing these as Real Zippos, and making out the finish/design was done by Zippo.  The most common fakes being Playboy,Star wars,James Bond Films,Star Trek etc Some are with a Blue ice and Spectrum Finish. Ive also seen these sold as numbered limited editons. Which makes you think this must be the reason you've not seen them before.......Beware, they are not !

So why do Counterfeit/Fake Zippos sell. Because their cheap, and at times with designs not used by Zippo, appeal to  some collectors. I DON'T think they are getting something rare or limited..........Just 100% worthless rubbish. Nearly as many fake and counterfeit "Zippos" now come out of China,Hong Kong, etc than Zippo make of Real Zippo's from ZIPPO, BRADFORD PA

Oh and the Death Proof Lighter its not Fake Proof !!!

BUYING TIPS; IS IT A FAKE ZIPPO OR A REAL ZIPPO ?

1/ LOOK AT THE PHOTO FOR BAD DESIGN/FINISH. VERY POOR LIGHT/FOCUS.

2/ HOW MANY OF THE SAME TYPE/DESIGN IS THE SELLER SELLING ?

3/ IS THE LISTING ONLY A THREE DAY LISTING.

4/ THE SELLERS NOT HAPPY ABOUT SHOWING OR GIVING THE ZIPPO'S DATE MARKINGS TO YOU.

5/ YOU'VE ASKED FOR INFORMATION BUT YOUR NOT GIVEN ANY.

6/ STATES ITS A LIMITED EDITION BUT GIVES NO INFORMATION ON THE NUMBERS MADE.

7/ CASE WITH ZIPPO IS THE SAME ONE USED ON THE SELLERS OTHER ZIPPO LISTINGS

8/ TITLE STATES "ZIPPO LIGHTER  STYLE"OR "ZIPPO LIGHTER TYPE"

9/ POOR AND PRIVATE AND VERY LITTLE FEEDBACK.

10/ VERY LITTLE, OR NO DESCRIPTION/PHOTO

11/ THE ZIPPO PRICE STICKER IS A BAD COPY(OVERSIZED)

12/ THE SAFETY SEAL IS THE WRONG SIZE/COLOUR.

13/ THE LIGHTERS METAL FINISH LOOKS TINNY.

14/ ITS EMBLEM IS OVERSIZED COVERING MOST OF THE LIGHTER,AND NOT SPLIT/CUT.

15/ IS IT JUST TRYING TO HARD TO BE A ZIPPO.

16/ THE DESIGN/LETTERING ON THE ZIPPO LOOKS LIKE A POOR FINISH AS IF ITS OUT OF FOCUS,BUT THE LETTERING ON THE ZIPPO CASE ITS IN IS CLEAR AND CORRECT. (POOR COPY IN A REAL CASE)

17/ITS JUST TO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

IF YOU SPOT ANY FIVE OF THE ABOVE ON ANY ZIPPO LISTINGS THEN BEWARE !!!!

A SELLER OF A GENUINE ZIPPO WILL TRY TO USE THE MOST CLEAR PHOTOS IN THEIR LISTINGS TO AVOID ANY DOUBTS THAT A BUYER/BIDDER MAY HAVE.

WELL I HOPE YOU FOUND THIS OF INTEREST,AND IF YOUR STILL UNSURE THAT THE ZIPPO YOUR BUYING OR BIDDING ON IS 100%  REAL..... YOU CAN ALWAYS CONTACT ZIPPO AND SEND THEM A COPY OF THE PHOTO IN THE LISTING,OR THE ITEM NUMBER.
